ABCs of a More Perfect Workplace

Designing a Future of Work where all workers thrive

We are at a key moment of change in the way businesses, leaders, and workers operate.

Seismic shifts in technology, the economy, and workers’ expectations call us to reimagine how work - works.

ABCs of a More Perfect Workplace (ABCs) takes a people-first look at how to create a more equitable and sustainable Future of Work.

ABCs will amplify the insights of those already working in this area, while facilitating conversations and research offering new perspectives.

The goal is to develop recommendations for people- and equity-conscious leaders to positively shape how business is done in their companies and teams.

Why ABCs

My experience as a career coach and practitioner in the field of work equity has opened my eyes to the significant gap between the ideal and reality for many employees. While I help individuals navigate the complexities of their current work environments, I'm also deeply invested in exploring how organizations can be structured to foster a mutually beneficial future of work.

The ABCs of a More Perfect Workplace initiative isn't simply about idealistic aspirations. It's a data-driven and action-oriented approach built on the foundation of real-world challenges and opportunities.

Here's the crux of the matter:

  • Research consistently shows that disengaged employees cost companies billions annually.

  • Studies reveal that a lack of workplace equity stifles innovation and productivity.

  • Furthermore, marginalized communities bear the brunt of these issues. We face financial hardship, limited career advancement opportunities, and a higher risk of mental health issues due to inequitable workplaces.

The ABCs initiative addresses these issues head-on. We're not interested in simply pointing out problems. We're here to co-design solutions with a focus on three key areas:

  • Rights: Identifying the fundamental rights employees need for a fair, equitable, and productive work experience.

  • Responsibilities: Examining the shared responsibilities of companies and workers, drawing insights from successful workplace collaboration models.

  • Rituals: Reimagining workplace practices and establishing new "rituals" that promote inclusion and business results, informed by organizational development best practices.

The ABCs initiative exists because I, and many other practitioners, believe in the tangible benefits of a more equitable future of work. Let's leverage our collective knowledge and experience to design a work environment where everyone thrives, especially those who have been historically marginalized.
